EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
