Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to contest certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
